Redruth Tourist Information
Situated 2 miles east of
Camborne on the A393 and just off the main
A30 trunk road.
Closely affiliated to Camborne through the mining industry
was once a very prosperous centre. (For more details on the
areas mining heritage please see the
Camborne page) Some Victorian, Georgian
and earlier buildings still remain. In the churchtown area
of the town there are some very old cottages and the Uny’s
Parish Church, this is mainly Georgian with a 15th century
tower. The ‘Lychgate’ has an unusually long coffin rest,
this was to deal with deaths from the many mining disasters.
The Scottish inventor William Murdoch (1754 – 1839) made
Redruth his home. He invented such things as coal gas
lighting and vacuam powered tubes, his house was the first
in Britain to use gas lighting.
To the south of Redruth is the dramatic ‘Carn
Brea’, rising some 750’ above sea level.
The summit of this granite hill is crowned with a 90’
monument to Francis Basset, he did much to improve the lives
of poor labourers in the area.
Also on
Carn Brea is a small castle, part
medieval, was once used as a hunting lodge. Carn Brea is
also the site of the earliest Neolothic Settlement in
southern Britain. It also has the remains of an iron age
fort.
In June of each year there is a midsummer bonfire ceremony,
a pagan ritual with the lighting of a fire on the summit
signaling other fires to be lit all the way from Lands End
to the River Tamar on the
Cornwall/Devon border.
A popular attraction near Redruth is the ‘Shire Horse and
Carriage Museum’. See magnificent shire horses at rest, play
and work, together with the largest collection of horse
drawn houses in Britain.
The town centre is quite small with one long steep hill
forming most of the shopping centre. However, there are some
quite pleasant little shops/bakers/tea rooms/restaurants and
pubs that make this town popular with locals.
The main London to
Penzance rail link runs through here
making it readily accessible.
There is very little accommodation in Redruth centre but
there are a few guest houses on the approach roads. Most
tourists to the area tend to use nearby coastal resorts such
as
St
Agnes,
Portreath,
Hayle and
St
Ives.
