Jan and Chris Everard welcome you to Ovis, (which means "sheep" in Latin). Ovis is an old farmhouse with origins in the 17th century, set in 9 acres of farmland and woods. It is situated on the edge of the Coombe Valley above Duckpool Beach, in Morwenstow, near Bude. Historically, it was probably an old shepherd's hut, which over the years has been elevated in status until it is the comfortable farmhouse of today. With its fantastic position, commanding views down the wooded Coombe, it has been the subject of poetry, extracts of which we display in the house.

There are no near neighbours and guests will be able to view buzzards lazily flying over the house, kestrels hovering over the near paddocks - and the more unusual birds we see on our feeders include woodpeckers, goldfinches, willow tits and bramblings in winter, along with the more common robins, tits and finches. We have even seen a sparrowhawk try to take birds from the feeders, unsuccessfully, I am pleased to say, but a stunning sight. If you are very lucky you may see a red deer stag or a hind in the field behind the house.

We are a short walk either across two fields via the coastal path, or down the lane, to lovely sandy Duckpool beach, which sits between the craggy cliffs that mark this area as so special. We are four and a half miles from Bude, with its two sandy beaches and for the more adventuresome, there are several lonely beaches to be found within three miles if you have the energy, the map and the walking boots!

There is a lovely local ancient pub (The Bush Inn) within two and a half miles, which provides food, and Kilkhampton three miles distant has two more pubs serving food. We are quite happy to take walkers to the local for an evening meal.

We have one bedroom for guests, which has a king sized bed and en-suite shower room, with WC and basin. There are lovely views from this room, and downstairs, guests have a private "snug" sitting room with TV and comfortable chairs, and where we also serve breakfast. Breakfast will be traditional English, the produce sourced from the local farm shop with fresh bread, (usually made by Chris) and home made marmalade. We have several sitting areas where you can enjoy the garden, the views and the sounds of the countryside - yes you may have to listen to a tractor occasionally! We usually have livestock - possibly tame sheep, or horses, with our labradoodle and a moggy or two who all provide extra entertainment.

Little wonder that there is a saying locally that visitors, having once discovered Cornwall's most northerly parish of Morwenstow, always return for another visit The magnificent and impressive north coast cliffs, hidden valleys, wonderful coastal walks and the sheer history of this forgotten corner of Cornwall is a joy - quiet except for those six weeks school holidays - it still remains largely undiscovered!

Directions

From J27 on M5, take A361 to Barnstaple and then A39 towards Bideford and Bude. Stay on A39 after Bideford and take the 3rd turning right after the Welcome to Cornwall sign, (signed Morwenstow 3 miles) and continue through the small village of Shop (don't take any of the little roads off the one you are on). After approx 1 mile you come to a small crossroad (Stanbury Cross) and turn left. Follow this road for 1.3 miles and when the road drops down a steep narrow hill, the entrance to Ovis is on the left about half way down. (If you get to Duckpool you have gone too far!)
