The Old Vicarage is “old”.  Parts of the building date back to the reign of Elizabeth the first. The facade that greets you was added as a 'modern' extension in 1834, to provide more room for the then incumbent's large household, which included his 10 children. The capital (£338) for the work was raised by means of a mortgage agreement between the vicar, the Diocese of Exeter and the Governors of Queen Anne's Bounty.

The Old Vicarage ceased to be the official home of the clergy attached to Mullion's Parish Church, in 1981 when a new vicarage was purchased a few hundred yards further down Nansmellyon Road.

According to local historians, The Old Vicarage is at least third in a succession of previous vicarages. The other two houses still exist, and are now private dwellings. It is known that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stayed at The Old Vicarage, and it is thought to have provided the basis for the vicarage in the Sherlock Holmes story, The Devil's Foot.

Local Area: The Lizard:
A great place to stay if you enjoy walking, as we are just 10 minutes from the coast path and beaches and 30 minutes walk from magical Kynance Cove.
The Lizard village has plenty to offer, a friendly pub, cafe, fish and chip shop, general stores, post office, gift shops etc.

The Lizard Lighthouse, with its commanding position above the cliffs, is particularly interesting to visit. There has been a light to guide mariners since 1619, and it continues to burn today, still safeguarding seafarers around this treacherous headland.
The village is the home of the serpentine industry. You can watch local craftsmen turning the stone, which is unique to The Lizard, and perhaps buy a souvenir to remind you of your visit.
The church of St Winwalloe, at Church Cove dates from AD 600, beautiful and peaceful, it is well worth taking time to spend a few moments there.
