About The Old Chapel
The Old Chapel is a beautifully renovated former Wesleyan chapel
in the heart of Cornwall. Known in its original days as the
Broadoaks chapel, named after the hamlet of Broadoak, it was
built in the late 19th century and was used by a mix of farmers
and workers from the local Boconnoc estate, the home of the
Fortescue family, descendents of the Pitt family of
parliamentary fame.
The chapel saw dwindling numbers in the post war years and by
the early 1960s congregations were regularly in single figures
and there was no longer the finance to pay for its upkeep and
maintenance.
It closed in 1963 and was left to the elements for several years
before being bought by a local cabinet maker and joiner who set
about sympathetically converting it into a spacious, comfortable
home. Some original features remain and great care was taken to
preserve the feel of the chapel, giving it a peaceful internal
atmosphere.
The new owners, Michael and Babs, are continuing to care for the
chapel and have made several improvements including double
glazing with attractive leaded windows. There are also some
interesting pieces of art, several from Cornish artists, and the
house is decorated in a style in keeping with its age.
The chapel lies beside the road to Lostwithiel and the bedrooms
look east over countryside. We very much enjoy living here and
hope you will also enjoy your time at the former Broadoaks
chapel and leave us feeling refreshed.

Local Map
We are an easy to find location without the need to negotiate
Cornwall’s narrow lanes after a long journey from home, lying
three miles east of Lostwithiel in the village of West Taphouse.
If you are coming from the east, you can enter Cornwall by the
A30 or the A38. If you choose the former, leave the A30 at
Bodmin and follow signs to Lostwithiel. Once in the town, turn
left onto the A390 and after three miles you will reach West
Taphouse . The Old Chapel is the last property on the left.
Coming via the A38 you will cross the Tamar Bridge and should
then keep on the road for about 15 miles before reaching
Dobwalls. At traffic lights in the village turn left onto the
A390 (S/P St Austell) and go through East Taphouse and then
Middle Taphouse. You will see The Old Chapel as the first
property on the right as you enter West Taphouse.
We have ample parking and will be pleased to offer you a
reviving pot of tea or coffee upon your arrival. Our local town
of Lostwithiel has some terrific restaurants and pubs and if you
don't fancy driving we can run you down and collect you again
afterwards - your own complimentary taxi service! Looking
forward to seeing you!

Some ideas to help you make the most of your holiday:
The Old Chapel is perfectly situated for touring the beautiful
county of Cornwall . We are close to the lovely harbour villages
of Fowey, Looe and Polperro and the rugged majesty of Bodmin
moor.
The Eden Project and The Lost Gardens of Heligan are within easy
reach as is the beautiful north Cornwall coast and the surfing
beaches of Newquay and Polzeath.
Other villages such as Boscastle and Port Isaac (location for
the TV drama Doc Martin) are within 40 minutes’ drive and you
can easily drive or catch a train to Plymouth and wander the
ancient streets of the Barbican (departure point for the Pilgrim
Fathers) or visit the National Marine Aquarium.
Lostwithiel, our closest town, is fast becoming the antiques
capital of Cornwall with a variety of shops as well as regular
antique markets and auctions. There is a good choice of places
to eat from award winning restaurants to traditional Cornish
pubs and we will happily make recommendations and reservations
for you.
The Old Chapel is also ideal if you are attending a wedding at
the beautiful Boconnoc House, which is just a few minutes away.
We are also well situated for a number of National Trust
properties, including Lanhydrock House and Cotehele, near
Saltash. For garden lovers why not visit the Duchy of Cornwall
Nursery, again within a few minutes, where an extensive range of
plants, trees and shrubs can give you a lasting reminder of
Cornwall.
