Local
attractions:
The
local beach of Crackington Haven is just a 20 minute walk over the
farmland and through the woods. It is a magnificent beach in an idyllic spot sheltered by
high cliffs on each side. It
is well known for its surfing and soft sand.
It has a couple of beach shops with cafes and a well run
public house with restaurant.
This
a great walking country, with tranquil, wooded valleys, small
tumbling streams with occasional trout, farmland and rugged,
awesome cliffs, with secluded coves and beaches at their base.
Much of the coastland is owned and maintained by the
National Trust. This
is the edge of Thomas Hardy’s “A Pair of Blue Eyes” country
and St. Juliot Church is about 3 miles south.
The rivers Valency and Jordan meet just below Paradise and
tumble into the sea at the ancient, scenic port of Boscastle,
about 4 miles or so southwards.
Another 3 miles further will bring you to Tintagel and King
Arthur’s Castle.
To
the North are more beaches around the Victorian seaside town of
Bude, which has an indoor sports complex, splash pool, golf,
tennis, squash and many other leisure facilities. Pony trekking, river, lake and sea fishing are all possible,
both near Bude and within about 8 miles to the south.
The
proprietors also have a 2 bedroomed, terraced house, in an old
hilltop village, facing south towards the 9000 ft Mont Canigou in
French Catalonia. It
is in the Pyrenees, about 25 miles from the Mediterranean, between
Perpignan and Andorra.
