Mawgan Porth Situated 4 miles northeast of Newquay on the B3276 the little hamlet of Mawgan Porth is in a deep green valley on the coastal road mid way between Newquay and Padstow. It is conveniently situated for the Newquay Airport which is only a short drive away. The little village is not over commercialised having a small supermarket, places of refreshment including a very good pub that is more or less on the beach. The remains of a Saxon settlement can be seen here. There are also various 9th to 11th century dwellings that formed part of this fishing and herding community that can be seen near the beach as well as the foundations of a larger courtyard house and cemetery. The coastline between here and Padstow to the north is extremely rugged and among the most impressive in Cornwall. Just inland from Mawgan Porth, the Vale of Lanherne leads for some 2 miles to the picturesque little village of St Mawgan. More of St Mawgan can be seen on the St Mawgan village page. There are some lovely coastal walks across the cliffs which soon brings you to Carnewas Island and mine, and the stunning Bedruthan Steps. The ‘Steps’ were created by systematic corrosion of the cliffs leaving an impressive series of volcanic rock stacks. The pillars rise majestically from Bedruthan Beach to form a series of columns stretching across the bay from Pendarves Island to Diggory’s Island. Bedruthan Steps is owned and protected by the National Trust. A car park has been provided at the top of the cliffs with a very pleasant café. Toilets area also available. The views are remarkable, but beware, if you are afraid of heights don’t go close to the cliff edge, it’s a long way down. There is a variety of accommodation in Mawgan Porth and the surrounding area. Bed and breakfast accommodation in Mawgan Porth are few in number. There is a variety of self catering in Mawgan Porth including a caravan park and a holiday park with chalets. There is a local pitch and putt, crazy golf and nearby there are riding stables and a golf course. Mawgan Porth is on a direct bus route to Newquay for those requiring a more hectic night life. The beach is fine sand backed small sand dunes. Like all beaches in the Newquay area, good surfing can be enjoyed when conditions are favourable. The beach has a blue flag status. Services include: Car Park, refreshements, toilets, lifeguard service in the summer months. Dogs are permitted.
