Lands End

Enjoy the magnificent views from this beautiful granite outcrop 200 feet above the Atlantic Ocean.

The north and south sections of the Cornish coastal footpath meet here with excellent cliff top walks, north towards Sennen Cove or south towards en. Gwenap Head.  The path is safe and enjoyable but some sections come close to the cliff edge, care should be taken.

This is as far west as you can go in England, it is worth the trip just to enjoy the rugged beauty and looking our across the Atlantic.  On a clear day you can see the outline of the Scilly Isles on the horizon.  The Longships Lighthouse is just a mile offshore and the Wolfe Rock Lighthouse 6 miles offshore.

Known to the Romans as ‘Belevian’, or ‘Seat of Storms’.  Naturally legends have arisen over the centuries and one claims that Land’s End was once the entrance to Lyonesse, the fertile kingdom that stretched from here to the Scilly Isles some 28 miles distant.  With great cities and churches a great wave is said to have engulfed it on the 11th November 1099, taking with it all building and inhabitants, save one  -  Trevilian, who escaped riding a white horse.  The Trevilian family crest still depicts a horse rising from the waves.  For many years sailors would tell of hearing bells ringing beneath the waves and doors and furniture being brought up in nets.

The nearest  beach is at Sennen Cove, a lovely stretch of sand which boasts a European Blue Flag award.

The nearest major town is 9 miles away at Penzance.

There is a daily bus service from Penzance except on Sundays during the winter.

Also available and highly recommended is an open top bus service along the coastal road to St Ives.

Just a few miles to the north is the Lands End Airport with Sky Bus services to the Scilly Isles and part of England.

There is a large car park on the point with the Lands End Visitor Centre.  The centre includes:

  • Return to the last Labyrinth

  • The land of Greeb Farm & Crafts

  • RSPB Wildlife Discovery Club

  • Dollar Cove Suspension Bridge

  • The End to End story
