| Vast Sand Dunes at Crantock |
Crantock Bay from the west |
A picturesque
little village with much of the area owned by the
National Trust lying just across the
River Gannel estuary from
Newquay.
Now, a pleasant place to live or spend a holiday, but
surprisingly it does have a long history.
From the 12th century until it closed in 1545 it was home to
a famous college which was a great seat of learning. Old as
this may be it’s history goes back even further. A Celtic
monastery was founded here before the Norman Conquest. After
the conquest it was given to a Norman nobleman, who then
gave it to Montacute Priory in Dorset.
There has been a church established on the site of the
present church since 600 AD. St Carantoc Parish church was
once Collegiate, contains a particularly beautiful Rood
Screen and some excellent wood carvings. In 1412 the tower
of the Norman Church collapsed destroying the Nave.
Today,
Crantock is a lovely picturesque little
village with thatched cottage, a few tea rooms, an art
gallery, post office/stores, two pubs, the ‘Cornishman’ and
‘The Albion’. Both pubs are close to one another in a quiet
little cul-de-sac. The latter pub is perhaps how one would
imagine an old Cornish pub would look, thatched roof,
cottage appearance on the exterior and full of character on
the inside. It sells a selection of real ales, good meals,
and bar snacks. In the summer it is quite popular to sit
outside and enjoy a meal.
It is just a short walk to
Crantock’s popular sandy beach, for a full
description and images please go to our
Cornwall Beach Guide under the Newquay
section.
Most people come to Crantock to relax on the beach or enjoy
the excellent walks around the River Gannel or over the
cliffs. However, it is very close to Newquay, just a 10
minute drive away. For a full description of what is on
offer in Newquay please go to the Newquay page on Towns and
Villages.
Another popular local pub is the ‘Bowgie Inn’ on
West Pentire. This
is at the very mouth of the River Gannnel estuary with
beautiful views overlooking Crantock Beach.
Accommodation in Crantock is quite limited although there is
a large caravan park almost on the beach. The nearest
accommodation in any quantity for the region is Newquay.
