Crackington Haven Tourist Information
Just over 7 miles from
Tintagel and just a short drive from its
neighbour, the major holiday resort of
Bude.
This is indeed a dramatic place, a sand and shingle little
cove overlooked by 400 feet cliffs. The bay is sheltered by
the cliffs of
Pencannow and by the headland of
Cambeak to the south.
Crackington Haven was originally a small port importing coal
and limestone and exporting slate.
The little cove is approached down a steep narrow road, at
the bottom there is an excellent Inn with a well recommended
restaurant, a few houses, and a couple of beach shops.
The beach is extremely popular both with visitors and locals
alike. It is good for surfing, bathing, some nice rock pools
to explore, ample car parking in two car parks, lifeguard
service during the summer, dog ban from Easter to October
1st.
The scenery around Crackington Haven is so rugged and
dramatic that some episodes of the television series
‘Poldark’ was filmed here.
Nearby is
St
Genny’s Parish Church with its sloping
graveyard, wonderful views towards Lundy Island can be
enjoyed from here.
The scenery can only really be fully appreciated by walking
the cliff top path from Crackington Haven towards Cambeak
Headland. However, care should always be taken, the path
goes close to the cliff edge which is not always stable.
Just to the south of Crackington Haven leads to ‘Strangles
Beach’, again, care should be taken as
this is a difficult path. Details of ‘Strangles Beach’ can
be seen on the
Cornwall Beach Guide section. Above
Strangles Beach is ‘High Cliff’, the highest point on the
Cornwall coast rising 735 feet above sea level.
Close to Crackington Haven on the coast road is ‘Trevigue
Working Lifestock Farm’ this is owned by the National Trust.
The animals here include badgers, deer, foxes, rabbits,
birds of prey, bats and glow worms.
The only accommodation in Crackington haven by the beach is
provided by the Inn but there are numerous guest houses and
farms very close providing both bed and breakfast and self
catering.
